Q: Do I need a licence to compete?
A: If your car is not likely to run under 12 second quarter mile times you can parches a day only licence although if you race more than a couple of times big savings can be had by purchasing a Sportsman licence. A Sportsman licence minimum is required at all National events.
Q: Do I have to get my sportsman licence from the track?
A: No a Sportsman licence can be obtained by down loading a form off this site and sending to the NZDRA office, this will speed up your entry at any Drag racing event and save you money.
Q: When do I need a competition licence?
A: You need a competition licence for any vehicle including a Bike that runs quicker than 12.0 seconds in the quarter mile and if the class you wish to enter stipulates that one is required.
Q: How do I get a competition licence?
A: If you have a Sportsman licence and your car runs under 12 seconds it is considered an upgrade, fill in a new form and send it with the diffrance of the fee (Competition licence fee less Sportsman fee if it is currant) and a limited competition licence will be sent to you.
Q: My car does not have a WOF or rego can I race it?
A: Yes but it needs to undergo a Tech Inspection, this is just a check of safety requirements for the speed the vehicle is expected to reach, a logbook will be issued to the vehicle once passed.
Q: I have a Rotary powered car do I have to have a flywheel shield?
A: Unfortunately yes, the frequency Rotaries have for flywheel / clutch explosions has forced us to implement these measures, as we are responsible for the safety of the spectators and officials at all of our sanctioned events.
Q: Not sure how fast my car will run how do I know what class to run?
A: The best starting point would be Super Street, it is a DYO format and anyone can be competitive. If you run quicker than the 11.0 minimum the track staff will upgrade you to Super Sedan and the NZDRA official (Area Stewart) will notify you if any additional safety gear if it is required.
Q: How does the NZDRA series work?
A: Basically Racers compete over 7 events over the competition season throughout the country, the 5 televised events are called National events meaning open to all NZDRA classes as per the rule book, the other two events are called Reginal events and are included in the series, these events do not cater for the group one classes (Top Alcohol, Top Doorslammer etc) primarily because the tracks are too narrow to run side by side passes at these venues. Each of the A grade tracks being Christchurch, Masterton, Taupo and Champion all have one National event and then the NZ Nationals which is also the Series final will be tendered to the verious A grade tracks. The emphasis is to encourage racers to travel to other tracks to incur points insuring a good show for the spectator.
Q: I have heard I must run a decal at some of these events, what if my sponsor is in direct opposition to them?
A: At the televised events you are expected to run the Event sponsors decal if requested, you may also be required to run the Series sponsor decal and your Bracket sponsors decal. These are not large decals, but refusal to display them will result in no points, no prize money and possibly exclusion from the event. These companies are putting money into our sport and this is just one way to acknowledge their support. Your sponsor should have no problem with this because why is he sponsoring you - exposure, the best exposure is on TV and Event sponsors help pay for TV it’s that simple, beside’s who has the biggest signage on your vehicle! |
