ROUND TWO OF THE CENTURY YUASA POWER SERIES SUMMER

NATIONALS IN TAUPO DELIVER TIGHT RACING, RECORDS AND NEW FACES ON THE PODIUM.

The drag racers nemesis - rain – nearly washed all hope of a successful one day Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival Summer Nationals held at Taupo International Dragway, but a hard working team and revised tight schedule provided the many spectators with a great race meeting with close racing and some new faces taking the winners spots!

With qualifying reduced to a one shot deal, the racers rallied and made up for lost time by keeping the staging lanes full at every opportunity.

With Top Alcohol easily one of the most competitive brackets in the Yuasa Power Series, a well deserved first competition win went to Shane Lodge, securing valuable points in the Power Series National Championship. Both Chris Johnston (Harcourts) and John Neilan in the Digga Top Alcohol Dragster suffered engine damage.

Parry Hunt soloed for a win coming to grips with the stunning new Camaro Top Doorslammer and again putting National Championship points  “in the bank “.

Athol Williams – remember him – the first kiwi to win a National Championship in Australian Drag Racing History - reset the Top Bike record (to be ratified) with a cool 6.68 and 325.64 km/h and was well received by the Taupo fans.

The low of the event was Kevin Macgregor tagging the immovable Taupo wall and damaging the front of the Castrol Edge Pontiac – more work for the Heat Treatments team.

With NZDRA’s direction and Century Power backing the National Series, drag racing in NZ is on the “up and up”!

Watch for news relating to the next round of the Yuasa Power Series, the Digga Southern Nationals held at Powerbuilt Raceway, Ruapuna, Christchurch on the 30th January.

HAPPY NEW YEAR COMING AT YOU IN TAUPO JAN 4TH

Kumeu Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival Summer Nationals has some great racing instore.

These two competitors are a show on their own. Wayne Grimmer in the Battery Town sponsored Hemi powered Barracuda taking the win at the Fram Autolite Northern Nationals and setting the new record at 8.27 seconds for AA/Top Street has put pressure on Sam Levien’s wedge powered Brave Design Duster which is not far behind. About a tenth of a second between them and Sam’s ability to cut some pretty sharp lights, could be a change of winner at the Kumeu Classic Summer Nationals event. Besides the close races between these two, it’s the start line action that wows the crowd’s with both Mopar's leaving the startline with wheels high in the air.

Of cause there is also the 406 Chevy powered Cylinder Head Services Honda Accord of Balclutha's Roger Binnima and the big inch Pirtek Camaro of New Plymouths Jeff Dobson to overcome for a repeat for the two Mopars, and be certain, Roger would like to keep his title as New Zealand’s number one Top Street racer! So some serious racing will be assured in the Century Yuasa Power Series at round two the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival Summer Nationals.

TAUPO ACTION 4th JANUARY: 382kph TOP FUEL BIKE
Wednesday, 23 December 2009

athol_1The Australians called him the flying Kiwi, We’d just call him crazy. Athol Williams is the only foreigner to win a Group One Australian Championship and he did it by riding a 238 mph (382 + kph) Top Fuel bike at an amazing 6.1 seconds in quarter of a mile!

Financially unable to contest the ANDRA Pro Series this season, Athol is going to run his unbelievable RBS two wheeled machine at the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival Summer Nationals for the New Zealand fans and will undoubtedly smash his own NZ record of 7.65 seconds easily, along with the long standing speed record of Ray Peterson at 166.93 mph (268.59 kph).

That’s right Athol’s best speed is over 115 kph faster at the end of the quarter mile than the existing record!

A Top Fuel engine, whether it be a Top Fuel V8 dragster or a 4 cylinder bike is something else to experience, the noise when under load is awesome. Originally developed as rocket fuel this stuff makes anything on wheels act like a rocket and to do it on a motorcycle and at world record performances is worth the trip to the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival Summer Nationals on the 4th of January just to see it, let alone the full fields of Top Alcohol, Top Doorslammer and other support divisions.

Pre entries for the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod festival have closed but surprisingly an unbelievable field of Doorslammers have entered. Nine (9) of the unpredictable beasts will weave there way down Taupo International Dragway in an effort to take the win, none more so that Fram Northern Nationals winner Bob Owens who has a good start on the bigger performing racers of Ross Taylor and the soon to enter competition Parry Hunt.

Wayne Hussey missing the first Century Yuasa Power Series round due to parts not turning up  is keen to make up lost ground and a 7.0 pass at the recent track meeting at Fram Autolite says he is back on pace with only his line lock button to worry about.

Mike Witteveen although not making the final against Owens due a clutch issue has gained consistency and in Top Doorslammer that more often than not is what it takes to win.

Ford man through and through Squig has the STA Falcon performing very well and is another that would not be a surprise in a final, with more runs his performance will be a worry for many.

With some seat time under his belt Dave Tully now racing in the T/D division is another who could work his way through the more powerful but more unpredictable cars in the class, particularly on a surface that is very weather sensitive.

New comer to the T/D class but not new to racing is Tauranga’s Mike Reid, not new to the track is his new pride and joy, a certain 55 Chev that has always found the winners circle and still holds many track records around the country, getting used to a blown 526ci Chev & Lenco may take a bit to get used too though.

A welcome return although many did not see it when it first hit the track a couple of times here in NZ is Mark Thomas and his 526 TFX powered 56 Ford Customline. Mark recently signed up a major sponsor and had Robert Tynan of Rocket Speed Shop in Hamilton convert the car to left hand drive, another having to reacquaint himself to the driver’s seat this may hinder his performance….but then again……

Check back often for other class updates for the Kumeu Classic Car & Hot Rod Summer Nationals!
