FRAM NORTHERN NATIONALS ROUND UP

The first national round of the Century Yuasa Power Series was looking ominous with the weather putting a dampener half way through the second round of qualifying on Saturday.

This was to have an adverse effect on some divisions as some late comers had not had a qualifying run so were not in the field! Sunday morning was not looking to good as light rain was still falling but was supposed to clear that afternoon so the call was to be made by 12 noon.                                       By 10.30 things were looking brighter and the drying of the track commenced. Racing was underway by 12 and some very impressive runs were going to be evident right from the start.

Six national record runs were claimed with John Neilans Digga Top Alcohol dragster taking the TA/D record from 6.091 to 5.846 and the speed from 232.80 to 242.93 mph (390.87 kph).

Wayne Grimmer in his Plymouth Barracuda dropping the A/TS record from 8.371 to an 8.274 ET.

Robbie Ward smashed the DD/Dragster record with a 8.646 on a 9.027 record and then later ran a outside the 1% backup by miles with a 8.071 second 167.72 mph (269.86 kph) blast in the semis before succumbing to problems in the final!

Bikes also got a hammering at the hands of Dean Veale in AA/Altered Bike by dropping the record from 9.281 to 8.750 @ 160.56mph (258.34 kph).

The AA/Super Sedan record of 8.385 seconds was on borrowed time with Reece Fish getting to grips with the twin turbo’d 56 Chev and now lays claim to the fastest Super Sedan in the country with a 8.276 @ 171.93 mph (276.63 kph) and with a 7.962 pass later that day this record has some way to go yet.

There where a number of personal best also at the meeting but due to classification rules these where not within requirements to be claimed. In all a great start to the Century Yuasa Power Series and with the Kumeu Classic Car Summer Nationals just a month away there will be some frantic searching for the required horsepower to keep up with these record holders.
