What went down as one of the best Drag races for some time shows with the right format you will get willing racers putting on the best show for the appreciative fan’s.

With a few exceptions most divisions where well supported and the racing hotly contested. The Castrol Edge Top Alcohol category without doubt put on the best action seen since the tours of Lemon and Burr or Gary Phillips early in the early 1990’s. With plenty of side by side 5 second passes and good close racing to boot Anthony Marsh took the win in the controversial nitro injected dragster with a 5.45 @ 263.72mph over a slowing Shane Lodge with a 6.024 @ 215.47mph.

The Castrol Edge Top Doorslammer category had a disappointing final when Wayne Hussey threw rods in the usually reliable 67 Nova the previous round, but a determined Mark Bardsley ran the Century Batteries Camaro down the track to a commendable 6.728 @ 203.06mph  to take the lead in the championship.

Digga Competition was another class committed to a solo run when the lady of speed Karen Hay busted her converter after running an impressive 6.83 pass in qualifying and 7.2’s in the earlier rounds but the hi tech nostalgia rail of Robbie Ward again took a convincing win with a record setting 7.841 pass @ 163.73mph.

K & N Top Street has always been a great division to watch and even with the absence of the wheel-standing Chryslers is a good show. The fact that a street appearing XW Falcon running in G/TS can take out one of the top runners gives some indication how tuff this class can be, Grant Little’s Ford taking out Jeff Dobson’s A/TS Pertek Camaro with a 10.473 @ 116.47mph to a 8.748 @ 167.78.

DJ Race Fuels Sport Compact produced some great racing from the little Rotary powered rockets and Steve Rossen had to squeeze the tree to have any chance of a win as Brent Curren’s Castrol RX3 set a personal best 7.559 @ 179.16mph pass to the RX7’s red lighting 8.44 @ 157.34mph effort.

Competition Bike had another surprise winner with Peter Morrison on his 750cc Triumph running a 11.958 @ 102.99mph well under the B/PCB index to Spike Allen’s 9.503 @ 136.66mph pass.

Modified had a well deserved win by Mike Reeves in his little 23T Altered over Paul Jacobs 23T with Paul cutting a much better light but running off his dial in, mike running 9.22 on a 9.13 dial against Pauls 9.596 on a 8.95b dial in.

Permaseal MLS-R Super Sedan has for some time had very close racing and the Sherwin team in the little red and white Escort consistently find themselves in final round appearances, unfortunately for them are racers like Jim Pottinger who can cut the meanest lights all day and ran as close to his dial anyone would dare. The Escorts .100 light and a 9.53 on a 9.57 dial in sounds like a winner but Jim’s .041 light with a 10.21 on a 10.26 dial in gave Jim the winning numbers, now that is a close race!

Modified Bike had a good field of racers as always and a couple of regulars found there way into the winners circle with Ross Donaldson taking the win over Bill Hamilton when Bill red lit his chances away. Ross did run closer to his dial in running 10.94 on a 10.85 so for Bill to have won he would have had to cut better than a .048 light.

Junior Dragster was an all Briggs affair with Kieran Price taking the win over Tyler Zahorodny by cutting a better light and letting Tyler breakout, Kieran running 8.63 0n a 8.65 but Tyler running 8.42 on the minimum 8.50 dial in.

Super Street although generally populated by local racers we find once a win is under their belt they tend to travel a little and we hope this will be the case with these two guys. Dave Hughes narrowly missing the win with a 11.96 on a 11.85 dial against Northern Nationals winner Geoff Sadler who ran 11.21 on a 11.10 dial with Geoff cutting a .054 better light.

FANTASTIC RACING AT CENTURY BATTERIES BLAST OFF
Monday, 07 February 2011

Drag racing fans that missed attending the NZDRA Northern Nationals event at Fram Autolite this Sunday should at least keep and eye on TV3 News tonight to see a glimpse of what they were missing!

The quickest pass in NZ drag racing history by Antony March and many side by side 5 second Top Alcohol runs by the other competitors will confirm these Century Batteries Power Series events are a must to attend.

Fans have reported the best Drag Racing show so far this season was the order of Sundays racing with the above mentioned Castrol Edge Top Alcohol division putting on a fantastic display of speed, skill and race craft.

With all competitors running within tenths of a second, reactions from the start where going to be an all important part of eliminating your opponent and runner up Shane Lodge proved that when he defeated the Digga Dragster of John Neilan, with a .063 reaction and 5.936 ET to Neilan’s .171 reaction but quicker 5.896 ET Lodge took the win.

Ten other divisions put on some unbelievable racing for the appreciating spectators. Footage of their finals and hard fought battles will air on TV 3 with the main program later in the season. (date’s to be advised).

With only one crash taking less than half an our and a light shower for 15 minutes later in proceedings the entertainment was well in hand with, the on track antics of motorcycle stunt man Nic Krouse of Stunt NZ, and from burnout master Burnout Barry in his 351 Windsor power Morris Minor gaving the fans something to fill the short down time, and the Drag slick basket ball game kept the kids entertained with plenty of giveaways  of Castrol, Teng Tools and other assorted prizes for the budding Tall Blacks.

Photos and event results will be up shortly.

CENTURY BATTERIES POWER SERIES BLAST OFF THIS SUNDAY
Wednesday, 02 February 2011

Families looking for high speed entertainment this Waitangi day need look no further than Fram Autolite Dragway. With the first of the Century Batteries Power Series Championship rounds about to kick off.

The Meremere drag racing facility will host the NZDRA Northern Nationals, with New Zealand’s top tier drag racing set to keep the whole family entertained.

NZDRA CEO Chris Tynan said it was an experience not to be missed. "Drag racing is just one of those sports where you have to be there to really experience the sights, the sounds, the smells, the whole experience," said Tynan.

The ever-popular methanol-burning Top Alcohol Funny Cars and Dragsters are sure to provide some great racing action for the fans with new additions to the race division insuring plenty of 5 second 390kph action.

"Top Alcohol is a category that is always guaranteed to produce some exciting racing, some tightly-fought battles" said Tynan.

The other headliner class is Top Doorslammer, these 3000 horsepower machines always deliver a wild ride as their pilots attempt to man handle the wildest sedans on earth from the start line to the end of the quarter mile. “These short wheel based, over powered street appearing cars struggle for traction every time they approach 280kph at the 200 metre mark” said Tynan.

Not to be missed are the other 11 racing divisions catering from low 7 second Altereds without supercharged power to the well supported Junior Dragster division. This is where children as young as seven race replica dragsters to times that would embarrass a V8 Super car.

"Another great thing about drag racing is that access to the pit area is included in your event ticket, and you can stand by and watch the crews working on these high-powered machines just a few feet away.

"The sport has something for everyone and with the whole range of NZDRA classes hitting the track on Sunday – the family is sure to be entertained."

With a fresh combination of equipment in the LG-TengTools-Hauraki top alcohol funny car and just a handful of high speed runs completed, Hamilton’s Morice McMillin has both the confidence and desire to take on the big guns at the Century Batteries Power Series, the three-round national drag racing championship.

The first round at Fram Autolite Raceway, midway between Auckland and Hamilton, takes place on 6 February and sees the 24-year-old fully prepared to take another step closer to the highly experienced and well funded racers leading the Castrol Edge top alcohol division.

McMillin signed with LG Motorsport this season, bringing the well-known brand imagery of LG Electronics and Radio Hauraki to sit alongside the logo of his team’s major sponsor TengTools on the Dodge Avenger funny car.

“Competing in New Zealand’s fastest motorsport certainly has its dangers and challenges,” says the talented young racer who started racing at the age of eight in junior dragsters.

“But we take things very much in our stride. Compared to several other teams, we’re all pretty young, up against guys who have been racing at this level for 20-plus years. Every season we keep learning fast and, this year, we’re out to catch some of the bigger names of the sport, that’s for sure.”

McMillin finished third in the national championship in his debut season and secured a new quarter-mile national record for the funny car class with his best time of 6.66 sec, which saw him hit a top speed of 339 km/h (211 mph).

“We have always been behind horsepower-wise over the last two years, so with some new equipment this year we hope to make that gap smaller. We know there is a lot of hard work in front of us, but I also know the team is more capable of making our mark in the championship hunt!”

Over the past decade, McMillin has quickly gone from a self-described annoying young teenager asking all the questions to a respected competitor in the class.

“I do have to pinch myself sometimes when suiting up to race guys who I have looked up to for years. All we need to do now is beat them!”

For more information about McMillin and the LG-TengTools-Hauraki funny car go to the LG Motorsport website, www.lgmotorsport.co.nz
