Chris Tynan’s Century Batteries supported 55 Chevrolet Doorslammer team were under no illusions about how tuff the ANDRA Pro Series Drag Racing Top Doorslammer division was going to be. With 29 + local racers and some eight of them already 5 second members, it was going to be a big ask just to qualify for the 8 car field, so the plan was just to see how close the NZ car set up was on a track that was as good as anywhere in the world. You would have thought that a well prepped track would have made the car stick and not shake the tyres well there in lies the $64 question on how these high horsepower cars get down a race track. Unfortunately the heavier and higher horsepower cars have a harder time trying to control this problem. A couple of adjustments and a clean run in the second round netted the Century Batteries 55 a personal best of 6.20 @ 227.69. Not bad for the first full pass on Australian soil but with a 6.11 bump it was going to be tuff. With the better cool night air and a slightly cooler track that suited the NZ car set up they were hopeful of a better number. Unfortunately because they were forced to use a remote starter after their on board starter failed the remote version loosened the blower drive belt and the car could not make a pass.Without another qualifying shot they could not improve on their previous performance and with John Zappier getting in with his last qualifying pass this dropped the Tynan entry down to number 10th on the list, not good enough for the eight car field but then........... there where 5 locals on the out side behind him.
Chris would like to thank: Century Batteries NZ Ltd, Team Bray Racing, Mahana Graphics Hamilton and the Tynan team.

What do New Zealand drag racers do during the cold wet winter months when racing is not possible? Well the majority work on their machinery, save their dollars to attack the strip when the new season arrives. There are a few exceptions to this rule, one being the lure of speed and a record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the northern hemispheres summer. NZDRA Modified Bike champion Alan Thoresen has made this trip a few times with his versatile Castrol sponsored Kawasaki ZX-14 Black Thunder and this trip will also see NZDRA Competition bike champion Dean Veale on his Hayabusa Special take to the salt. I’m sure Alan has alerted Dean to the pitfalls of running on the salt as traction is one of the major variables when racing on that type of surface. Let’s hope these racers do well on the salt flats and return to defend their NZ championship titles.
One surface that will not be lacking traction is Willowbank and two kiwis will be representing NZ at the opening round of the Australian drag racing championships. Nearly a resident of Australia is the Rod Harvey, Terry Bowden tuned Rayglass Boats Toyota Celica running in the Super Compact division. The boys did very well in the ANDRA championship last season when rain cancelled a couple of meetings they could not attend, this year however the plan is to try and bring a gold ANDRA christmas tree back to NZ without it being for the Top Bike division!
The other vehicle racing at Willowbanks Alcohol Champs is Chris Tynan’s Century Batteries supported 55 Chevrolet. Tynan raced in the inaugural T/D division when it started back in 1996, qualified in the field and ran the first 6 for a NZ built sedan. This April Chris was approached by Victor Bray with a possible position within his race team. Victor on seeing the car and its performance thought it had a shoot at being competitive and so a co-op of the first two meetings in the ANDRA series will test the waters for performance and additional funding to contest the ANDRA championship. The 55 although based on the Australian Top Doorslammer regulations must still go through an acceptance procedure with the ANDRA tech department before getting the final OK to race in T/D. Although this may be seen to be a loss to NZ drag racings T/D class it does however allow Chris the opportunity to race his car and return to NZ to aid in the operations of the major race events within the NZDRA championship. The absence of three of the top NZ Doorslammers this season may allow others in the doorslammer division development time to perfect their combinations. NZDRA

For the last few years the sport has appeared to stagnate and in some aspects regressed from the well run sport we once were. Feeling it was an organizational issue possibly from the loss of some key people within our ranks the executive saw the need to update and renew our constitution to fit the changing needs of today’s racers, the roles of tracks, while also meeting the needs of our corporate partners for the betterment of our sport and their involvement within it. The original constitution was written in 1993 and was amended in 2002, it has served the sport well from it’s club based origins but numbers have since swelled to ten times the membership and as most members are no longer within a club structure of which was the focus in the original constitution and much has been lost in today’s more business orientated climate.
The existing executive have passed the proposed constitution and it is now up to you the members to vote for the change.
Key points to the new constitution are; that it gives more say to racers in regards to issues they feel may concern them, while conversely freeing member tracks to concentrate on their key objectives which should be running bigger, better events and upgrading their venues while also recruiting and up-skilling their workforce. The new board of directors will take a more strategic focus on the sport insuring it has a clear path for exposure and growth throughout New Zealand.
This is an important document so please take the time to read it (http://www.nzdra.co.nz/downloads/forms/index.php) and submit your vote for or against this change. There are some opportunities available to our sport which unfortunately cannot happen with the present structure.Due the size and spread of our membership and the need for all to have their say, voting forms will be sent to you to vote For or Against the proposed constitution. Votes should be recived by NZDRA no later than 31st July 2009.
Note: Any racers that have allowed their licence (membership) to laps are urged to renew immediately if they wish to have their say as only current members can vote.
