One hundred and sixty four racers made their way to Masterton for the
running of the Trust House NZ Nationals and although some where
sceptical of the event being run out side of the Auckland area the
Motorplex team proved to the doubters that anything is possible with
planning and enthusiasm
Nine national records the most notable being the long standing Top
Alcohol Dragster ET by Mark Vincent and the MPH again set by John
Neilan which was last changed at the Mitre 10 Centrals Nationals in
December, other records where set by Wayne Grimmer in A/TS, Graeme
Bates in DD/TS, Peter Meo in SS/A, Dean Veale in C/SB and Alan Thoresen
in AA/MB.
Masterton's track can turn on a dime and the traction from
Saturday to Sunday showed this as the Doorslammers of Hussy,
Smith/Brown and Tynan all had trouble getting down the cold surface
while Sundays brilliantly hot day brought the track to the clutch
settings of the Central Nats, unfortunately a wayward blower belt did
damage to Tynan`s TWS entry that could not be repaired in time for the
next round, a red light from Hussy handed the win to the Smith /Brown
team for their 5th National title. Dave West and David Greens Hauraki
entry both suffered from mechanical problems that prevented them from
making representative runs.
Many of the finals were won by opposition red lighting their
chances away showing racers are not just about performance of the
vehicle, the racer must be on his game and if you let nerves get in the
way you can give it away but on the whole the racing was hard and fast.
The final of Castrol Edge Top Alcohol was a fitting end to a great
weekend with Chris Johnston taking the win from Mark Vincent in another
final that was right to the wire and again proved to be the Group one
class to watch.
Final results are published on the results page.
