Hastings turned on the sunshine on Saturday for the eXtreme Auto eXpo,
held at Hastings Showgrounds. Covering just about all forms of
motorsport from RC cars, to freestyle motox, burnout competitions,
bikini jam, dbDrags, and a show n shine, and a swag of trade sites, to
the supreme horsepower of a supercharged Top Alcohol dragster
XAX is the brainchild of Deborah Russell, of the Hasting Youth and
Tourism Board. Deborah also has an extreme passion for trying to keep
people alive on the roads, and is behind a committee endeavouring to
establish a motor sport complex in Hawke`s Bay - an entertainment,
education and social venue. Deborah wants to see people getting smarter
about driving on the road, using more commonsense, being considerate to
others, having enough respect to enjoy life enough, and wanting to
survive!
NZDRA was approached to have a display at XAX, and four racers
stepped up to the plate. Bert King from Wellington had his pristine
Goodyear Top Alcohol dragster there, along with Napier`s own Wayne
Hussey with his beautifully presented Chevy Nova Top Doorslammer.
New Plymouth`s Richard McCarthy, although having a season off,
brought out the Eagle Automotive Plain Crazy Roadster, and Ian Wilkins
took time out from his busy racing schedule to show his immaculate AA
Dragbike `Afterburner`.
Bert King and Wayne Hussey and their respective crew`s were all
`fired up` to do startupson the day, and wowed the crowds with the
sheer noise and horsepower of their Group One beast`s, and created a
lot of interest in the NZDRA display. It certainly was great to head
back to Hastings for a summer weekend in the sun - we wish Deborah and
the motorsport complex committee all the best in achieving their goals.
eXtreme Auto eXpo will be happening next year, and we hope to have
a bigger and better interactive drag racing display, so stay tuned for
details!
