The Century Batteries NZ Nationals was shaping up to be an outstanding event but mother nature stepped in and washed Saturdays qualifying day completely out. Deciding to try and compact the event in to one day was going to be a hard ask but if things went smoothly it was possible in spite of over 170 racers in attendance. Unfortunately things didn’t start well when the first competition car down the track created an oil down, then once under way just enough drops fell from the sky to holt proceedings once again. Racing continued and again another oil down that saw the Fram track crew swing into action. Some time later the racing was held up with a crash through the finish line by Nigel Dixon’s 55 Chev, Nigel stepped from the car unhurt but the 55 sustained heavy frontal damage this was followed later in the day by another crash involving Robert Tynan in the Ross Rutherford owned WRX Subaru when a trans line burst on another 8.0 pass where smoke filled the car and he was unable to see, the car hit the embankment and quick work by the Fram crash crew saw things under control with Robert also stepping from the car unhurt other than a little smoke inhalation and some bruising, before the cleanup could be finished darkness was looming and so the finals were put off till the next event because of the lack of on track lighting.
