CENTURY BATTERIES POWER SERIES SET FOR ANOTHER THRILLING SEASON

Prepare for records to be broken in this year’s New Zealand Drag Racing Association’s Century Batteries Power Series.

Century Batteries Motorsport is ready for another highly-charged, adrenalin-fuelled drag racing season, as it once again supports the country’s premier national drag racing series.

The Century Batteries Power Series is a national points-based competition run over three events, which is open to all New Zealand Drag Racing Association’s (NZDRA) members.

Beginning on 6 February 2011, the series will see more than 150 competitors battling it out in their division at each of the three events to claim top points, break records and ultimately earn national titles.

CenturyYuasa Marketing Manager Gerard Wade says the company has had a long history of supporting NZDRA events and is very pleased to continue as the series sponsor for the second year.

“We see support of such a fantastic series as a way of connecting with our customers and recognising their interests and hobbies.  Many of the racers and team members work in the automotive trade or have an association with it.  Plus, most of the event’s spectators are motor sport enthusiasts, so they too have a heightened awareness of the industry,” says Mr Wade.

“As New Zealand’s leading supplier in automotive batteries, we are actively involved in a variety of motorsport events throughout the year.”

NZDRA CEO Chris Tynan says drag racing is fantastic for the thousands of spectators who attend each event as, unlike some motorsport competitions, you can see all the action from any vantage point around the track.

“These cars are reaching speeds of 400km/hr from a standing start within six seconds.  The earth is shaking and the noise is incredible – it is such an adrenalin-fuelled sport,” says Mr Tynan.

“We already know there’ll be some national records broken this year, with fantastic results in preliminary races by the nitromethaned-fuelled  Marsh Motorsport car, which is running in the top alcohol class against mechanically supercharged vehicles”.

The Century Batteries Power Series will be broadcast on TV3's Gillette Motorsport Show and Sky TV's Fujitsu Motorsport Show, with motorsport enthusiast and broadcaster Jamie McCarthy presenting both shows.   Radio station

The Rock has also teamed up with the series and will provide listener giveaways and promotions before each event.

The Century Batteries Power Series begins on 6 February 2011 with the NZDRA Northern Nationals at Fram Autolite Dragway, Meremere.  The weekend of 5-6 March sees the NZDRA Central Nationals held in Masterton and the series finishes with the NZ Nationals on the 19-20 March at Meremere.

Tuesday, 23 November 2010
Drag racing  in Nelson got off to a great start with perfect Motueka weather & for The Rock Fm Drag way a near record 77 entries list.
The opening season format of a 50% discount worked bringing many 1st time racers to the track, Of which from the feedback received we will see many of
them back.  Thankfully the idea flowed on to more supporters & spectators in bigger numbers to cover the ever increasing running costs.

FRAM AUTOLITE TEST & TUNE OPENER
Monday, 15 November 2010

Fram Autolite held their first test & tune for the 2010 2011 season and although few new vehicles ventured out for this opportunity there where a number of vehicles back that had taken a year or more off. One such vehicle was the 55 Chev of Craig Brown & Murray Smith, another away from the scene for some time was the Thunderbird formally campaigned by Steve Burniscone now in the hands of Paul Bloemsaat. The vehicle appeared to suffer from magneto problems limiting any good runs and Paul from completing his licensing passes. The Gubb family have returned to the track with a 68 Camaro and son Raymond and friend Russell Christoffersen both doing licence passes. As the Camaro has already clicked off some 9.0 passes over the weekend and the C/TS record is 9.08 where the car is expected to run. Top Street will again be a competitive class in 2011! Another car putting down some good passes was Bren Curran in the Castrol Mazda with a number of 7 second passes his best on the day was a 7.71. A racer prepared to do some miles this season is National park resident Jim Pottinger, Jim had attended the Taupo event in his Ford Capri two weeks back and again was out getting some laps in and sorting the bad stumble he had later in the day.

The bikes where represented by Barry Sproule who was running a V Rod and was running consistent 9.9 passes throughout the day, ex pat Englishman Don Irvine was trying out the Fram track on his B/DB Honda, he to had make passes at Taupo.

With many a racer rushing to complete rebuilds and install new components for the season opener in two weeks, the season is starting to take shape and with some old faces returning it looks like there will be plenty of action on track.

50 PLUS AT TAUPO TEST & TUNE
Wednesday, 10 November 2010

A good turnout of around 50 odd racers supported Taupo International Dragways test and tune for the beginning of the 2011 season. Many racers eager to try new improvements and in some cases new combinations just purchased or brought into the country. What at first appeared to be Rob Lowes red 55 Chev from New Plymouth turned out to be Paul Bodens new US imported 55 and with wheels up launches every pass this SS/A Chevy is going to be a real crowed pleaser. Another stand out performer on the day was Hamilton’s Grant Briffult who on his third and only full pass in his Hemi headed Ford AA/D clicked off a 6.94 @ 200mph with ease, Grants best to date .

Steve  Whitham from Whakatane with his Rotary powered drag bike clicked off some mid nine second passes before a backfire took out his intake manifold but with a bit of fine tuning this thing is going to be a great ride for him.

A number of observation runs where successfully competed by new and upgrading licence holders so the Drag racing scene is not looking like numbers will be down this season if Taupo’s opener is the gage.
